Staffing healthcare facilities is always a critical job. It’s what connects patients to care. But as coronavirus reared its head in early 2020, communities across the country were hit hard—and those challenges cascaded directly into community organizations, like hospitals, clinics and the like.

Locums companies were tested, too (and still are today). Could they staff as effectively as they say? How would they step up with tightening timelines, budgets and capacity? These questions, and more, were brought to Floyd Lee Locums’ doorstep—and this is just one example of how we met the moment:

In March of this year, a New Jersey hospital needed a creative solution to their staff shortage and found a dedicated partner in Floyd Lee Locums. They were in a pandemic hot spot, where over 54% of patients required treatment for COVID-19—and needed to staff 20 providers immediately to provide ventilation support.

Floyd Lee Locums’ Rapid Response Team put problem-solving to work fast to source respiratory therapists for the near term and the future. Within 24 hours, we had 15 therapists available, committed and with formal submissions—and then added an additional layer of coverage over the next two weeks.

How were we able to staff so successfully?

  1. We set up a Command Center with the facility’s executive team to advance emergency credentialing and stay up to date on emerging staffing needs.
  2. We coordinated a community outreach effort to source free or discounted housing and transportation for the providers themselves.
  3. As COVID-19 spread—and some therapists avoided work due to exposure or quarantine—we over-recruited to ensure enough providers showed up and were ready to go on Day 1.
  4. We sourced extra personal protective equipment (PPE) and hand sanitizer for providers, should there be a shortage during their assignment.

Although we typically focus on physicians and advance practice providers, our team hit the streets (virtually of course) and connected with hundreds of potential candidates in days, over a holiday weekend no less. This enabled us to provide coverage to sister facilities who were also struggling.

Our facility partners knew that with each call, they could count on good news. And that with each placement, they were closer to caring for their community completely. They realized they didn’t have to experience the challenges of COVID-19 alone. And that, after all, was what we were here for.
