Thinking About Locums? Here is How to Get Started

The New Year brings change and an opportunity for a fresh start. It is a great time to focus on life and consider the changes you would like to see in your career. For many physicians, the desire to have a career that offers more freedom, more control, and higher pay has led them to consider doing locums. However, before you start working as a locums physician, there are several steps you must take.

The first thing you must do before embarking on a locums career is decide if working as a locums is even an option for you at this time. If you are employed, are you able to moonlight as a locums physician? If you are currently working in a permanent position, are you in the process of leaving your job? What is your time frame and when would you like to get started? Secondly, you must decide on what type of locums work you would like to do in terms of specialty, duties, practice type, pay rate, schedule, and location.

Once you have clarified these things, the next, and arguably the most important thing to do is to start working on your unrestricted medical license. This is especially important for residents and fellows who will be graduating soon. Begin the process of obtaining your unrestricted medical licenses both in the state in which you are currently residing and the state or states you are strongly considering working. The licensing process can take anywhere from 6 weeks to six months.  Although, most locums companies will help with the licensing process, if you are already licensed, it is easier to find an assignment and the process goes much faster. In fact, many locums assignments will not even consider you if you do not have an active license in that state.

Finally, you must choose the right locums company. Choosing the right locums company and the right recruiter is imperative to making sure you have a positive locums experience. The locums company must understand your needs as a physician and be mindful of other issues in your life that can impact your ability to work as a locums physician.
